Many Salish tribes consider the cedar tree a symbol of generosity and providence, and had special rituals regarding the felling of cedar trees. The cedar tree has been revered for its spiritual significance for thousands of years. Its wood was used for the doors of sacred temples and burned in cleansing ceremonies for purification. The tree was thought to house important gods and to be an entrance to higher realms. Cedar wood is being studied for its beneficial effects on children with ADHD, with cedarwood oil found to decrease hyperactivity and evoking a calm, almost sedative quality reducing the stress and anxiety that comes along with the disorder.
